Many Factors Can Contribute to Core and Pelvic Discomfort
There are many possible reasons someone may experience pain, tension, or restricted movement through the core and pelvis. Previous injuries, surgery, childbirth, athletic training, repetitive work, limited mobility, muscle imbalances, stress, and compensation patterns may all contribute.
Everyday habits can also influence how the body feels. The way a person sits at work, stands during the day, drives, relaxes on the couch, or sleeps at night may repeatedly place the body in certain positions.
For example, someone may consistently sit with more weight on one hip, stand with most of their weight on one leg, or sleep in a position that rotates the pelvis. Over time, the body may adapt to these repeated positions. Muscles and fascia on one side may become tight or overworked while other areas provide less support.
This does not mean there is one perfect way to sit, stand, or sleep. The body is designed to move and tolerate many different positions. Problems may develop when someone remains in the same position for long periods, repeatedly favors one side, or does not have enough movement variety during the day.
Pelvic or core discomfort may also be felt somewhere else. A person might initially notice lower-back pain, hip tightness, tension near the lower ribs, or discomfort extending into the upper legs. This is why it is important to consider the person’s complete history and daily activities—not only the location of the symptoms.
During an orthopedic massage session, I may ask questions such as:
- How do you normally sit while working or driving?
- Do you usually stand with more weight on one leg?
- Which sleeping position do you prefer?
- Have you experienced a previous injury, surgery, or childbirth?
- Are your symptoms worse after sitting, standing, exercising, or sleeping?
- Do you regularly carry a child, bag, or work equipment on one side?
- Have you noticed changes in your balance, stride, or posture?
These details can help reveal patterns that may be contributing to the person’s discomfort. The goal is not to blame one posture or habit. It is to understand the many influences affecting the body and develop treatment around the individual.
